Class Levels: Falamos Português...Let's Speak Portuguese

Beginning 1 - Level A1.1

This class is primarily designed for absolute beginners and those with less than 20 hours of prior Portuguese instruction.

By the end of the A1 level, you will be able to:

  • Introduce yourself, including where you are from, where you live, and where you work
  • Order food and drinks at cafes and restaurants
  • Tell time
  • Describe your daily routine

The main objective is to familiarize you with simple interactions, essential vocabulary, and foundational grammar structures. The class is highly dynamic, with pace and content tailored to the group’s needs. Come prepared to engage actively and ask questions.

Students come from diverse backgrounds and skill levels, ranging from complete beginners to those who have been self-studying and exploring the language independently. Instruction is adapted accordingly to challenge you in enjoyable ways, foster connections, and introduce you to the richness of Portuguese culture.

Typically, progressing through A1 requires 20 to 40 hours of instruction combined with consistent study. This commitment ensures you build a solid foundation before moving on to the next level.

Beginning 2 - Level A1.2

This class is designed for students who already have some familiarity with Portuguese and want to progress beyond basic interactions by expanding their vocabulary and grammar. To enroll, you should have completed at least 30 hours of Portuguese lessons or possess a foundational knowledge of basic vocabulary and grammar structures.

By the end of the A1.2 level, you will be able to:

  • Talk about yourself and your family
  • Discuss your daily routine and describe your home
  • Make plans for the future, schedule meetings, and extend invitations
  • Purchase tickets and ask for assistance
  • Talk about past events

The class remains dynamic, with pace and content adapted to the needs of the group. Active participation and questions are encouraged.

Typically, completing A1.2 requires 30 to 50 hours of instruction combined with consistent study to prepare you for the A2 level.

If you are unsure which class fits your level best, enroll in the one you feel most comfortable with and attend the first session. You may change your registration up until the end of the second class.

Intermediate - Level B2

This class targets learners aiming for fluency in Portuguese who have already mastered fundamental grammar and can independently expand their vocabulary. The focus is on enhancing your ability to engage naturally and confidently with native speakers, reducing communication barriers.

In this level, you will:

  • Sustain conversations on specific topics such as work, family matters, personal interests, and past experiences
  • Read and write diverse texts, including articles, advertisements, personal essays, and short stories
  • Describe experiences and events in the past with clarity
  • Use the subjunctive mood to express dreams, hopes, ambitions, and to provide reasons and explanations for opinions and plans

The overall goal is to foster more spontaneous and fluid interactions, enabling you to communicate with greater ease and comprehension in real-life situations.
